The Economic Development team 

Our team specialises in the design and delivery of innovative programmes focused on three core practice areas: infrastructure and urban development; climate resilience and adaptation; and trade, investment and private sector development. We deliver impactful, results-driven programmes across Africa, South Asia, Asia Pacific, the Middle East and the Americas for clients including the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, European Commission, European Investment Bank and various other multilateral development banks and bilateral donors. 

 

About the role  

The Project Delivery Accountant will work as part of the Economic Development to undertake critical financial and accounting tasks. This role will work closely with Project Directors, Managers, and ASI’s Corporate Finance team to ensure robust financial management, compliance, and reconciliation across all project accounts. 

 

The position is ideal for someone with an accounting background who enjoys solving problems, improving systems, and supporting programme delivery in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment. 

 

Primary tasks and responsibilities will include but are not limited to: 

 

Financial Management and Reconciliation 

 

  • Lead financial reconciliation, acting as the key focal point between delivery teams, ASI Corporate Finance, and our clients 

  • Monitor project expenditure, ensuring costs are correctly coded, authorised, and aligned with contractual budgets 

  • Review and reconcile monthly accounts, ensuring consistency between internal forecasts and corporate reports

  • Prepare, review, and submit invoices to the client, ensuring all required documentation is complete and compliant

  • Monitor cash flow to support proactive financial decision-making

  • Respond to internal and external audit queries, ensuring all financial documentation is in order

 

Budgeting, Forecasting and Reporting 

  • Work with the project teams to track budget utilisation and flag risks of underspend/overspend early

  • Prepare financial summaries for internal and client reporting, ensuring accuracy and timeliness 

Onboarding and Operational Support 

  • Support the onboarding of new staff and associates, ensuring all team members understand correct finance processes for expenses, invoicing, and reporting

  • Troubleshoot payment or contracting issues between the delivery team and finance teams to maintain smooth mobilisation

 

Compliance and Process Improvement 

  • Ensure project financial processes align with ASI and client compliance requirements (e.g. client financial guidance)

  • Support ongoing efforts to streamline project finance workflows, including documentation templates and financial trackers

  • Work with ASI Corporate Finance to improve data flow and reporting accuracy between the project management team and central systems

Collaboration and Relationship Management 

  • Serve as the key financial liaison between delivery teams, ASI Corporate Finance, and client finance teams

  • Build strong relationships across internal and partner teams to improve coordination and financial transparency 

  • Provide ad hoc financial analysis and advice to project leadership when needed

They should relish working in a team, should be innovative, energetic, positive, and genuinely committed to making a meaningful and lasting contribution to ASI programming.

Adam Smith International seeks the following skills and experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field; a professional qualification (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CA) is desirable

  • 3-5 years’ experience in accounting, financial management, or project finance - ideally in a consulting or donor-funded context

  • Strong understanding of project accounting principles and reconciliation processes

  • Experience liaising between delivery and finance teams and working with multiple stakeholders

  • High proficiency in Excel and financial reporting systems

  • Excellent attention to detail, accuracy, and organisational skills

  • Strong communication skills and a solutions-focused approach

  • Familiarity with Sage would be helpful, but is not essential
